Fall In Love with Fort Wayne
This hands on field trip offers 4th grade students a chance to experience the exhibits at The History Center and imagine the grandeur of the law in the Allen County Courthouse. Developed in 2004 with Fort Wayne Community Schools, The History Center and The Allen County Courthouse Preservation Trust with funding from the Goldstine Foundation, Fall-in-Love with Fort Wayne is great news for all Allen County School teachers interested in free transportation and free admission to two of downtown Fort Wayne’s premier historical venues!
Funded through the Goldstine Foundation and the Heritage Education Fund, the program will pay for the transportation of visiting school groups between their school of residence and The History Center and the Allen County Courthouse. Visiting school groups will also receive free admission to The History Center and the Allen County Courthouse.
The joint-site curriculum reinforces Indiana’s Elementary Academic Standards. Trained staff and docents will walk students through our county’s unique shared heritage, reinforcing the common historical narratives and structural similarities between the two buildings. For example, at The History Center students can view a sword given to Chief Little Turtle by President George Washington and then view the events of the Miami leader’s life on the breathtaking friezes and murals at the Courthouse. Ideas we are reinforcing at both sites go beyond local history.
Both buildings are full of design and architectural learning opportunities. We compare building materials. There are math lessons and science lessons to learn at both sites, as well as lessons about our government and court systems.
Tours through the “Fall in Love with Fort Wayne” program will be available Mondays through Fridays and can be scheduled by calling the History Center at 426.2882.
